81 mph wind observed at Crown Point OR on 12 January 2012

Strong east winds were observed today (12 Jan 2012) in the Columbia Gorge as a high pressure center moved south through the intermountain region today. The pressure gradient reached a maximum of 9.6 hPa between The Dalles and Troutdale at 10 AM today. This large gradient produced winds as high as 48 mph with a peak gust to 81 mph near noon at Crown Point as observed by the CWOP weather station DW6193. This high wind occurred with a temperature of 37 F at Crown Point which was 1 deg F colder than the rather mild 38 F reading reported at 7000 ft on Mt Hood at noon.
