After first reaching 230 inches of snow back on 14 March 2011 the snow has refused to go away at the Mt Baker Ski Area. Now nearly 2 months later on 12 May 2011 the snow depth stands at 234 inches again after 6 inches of new snow fell there overnight. Here is what it looked like back in mid-March:
and little has changed since as we endure one of the coldest springs in the historical record in the Pacific Northwest.

Only once has the highway opened later than Memorial Day weekend and that was back on 14 June 1974. Contrast that with the winter of 1976-77 when the North Cascades Highway remained open through the entire winter.
